'Mate' Comic Compendium
The Literary Colloquium Berlin (LCB) invited to a 24-hour comic drawing last autumn. A kind of unrivaled competition that comic artists worldwide face every year and which consists of drawing a 24-page comic within 24 hours. Around 40 artists accepted the invitation to the Wannsee and faced the challenge of staying awake and from Saturday noon to draw a comic story by Sunday noon. The topic, as a common impetus for inspiration, was announced at the beginning of Augusto Paim, who had initiated the event: It should be about Chimarrão, a mate tea that is drunk in South America from a gourd with the help of a drinking tube. Because of the high caffeine content, Chimarrão helps to stay awake. In South America, the drink is traditionally drunk in company and it went very well with the nightly drawing marathon of the 24-hour comic artists. Driven by lots of mate soda, coffee and even chimarrão, the participants worked very diligently and a gong sounded every hour to remind them of the 24-hour rhythm. In the evening it was also open to the public and some artists were presented on the small stage. The journalist Lilian Pithan from the German Comic Association took over the moderation and also contributed the foreword. Twelve comics were selected for this book, showing a wide range of drawing styles and plots. There are funny as well as futuristic, erotic, metalinguistic or melancholic stories. Also included in the book are photos of the event and a folded comic book poster by Alex Chauvel. Text: Jaja-Verlag.
